Mobile devices receive voter data, survey questions, and contact scripts directly from VAN, and there is no requirement for manual preparation from alternative voter databases or lacking VAN access, since its functionality depends completely on its own ecosystem. Paper lists are eliminated by the app. But the initial learning curve is substantial. Volunteers need to get used to new complexity around survey coding, list management, and the correct way to sync data, which often necessitates instructional sessions. Volunteers have to be walked through the download-canvass-sync steps several times before completing on their own. These steps were sometimes skipped accidentally.

Technical hiccups in a proven concept

Occasional app crashes are reported by users, especially when the transition between the map view and voter list view is abrupt.
